Arabinogalactan in food industry


Arabinogalactan in food industry is a renewable and ecologically-friendly raw material with unique properties. It is used as an additive in food and cosmetic industry. Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) included Arabinogalactan into section “Jellifying Agents, Thickening Agents, Stabilizers of Botanical Origin” and registered it under number E-409.

Larch Arabinogalactan is approved by many countries for use as a direct food additive, as food emulsifier, stabilizer and sweetener as well as many other uses. More recently interest has been focused on the use of this polysaccharide as a low viscosity dietary fibre and as a prebiotic. This versatile extract has grown in popularity due to its reported ability to enhance immune function and fight certain diseases.

AG improves alimentation, absorption and general condition of gastrointestinal tract. It is easily incorporated into all kinds of foods and drinks and does not impact their taste. There is a registered mix of AG and milk or soy protein or both of them. Due to good dispersing property Arabinogalactan can be used in preparation of food (yoghurt, juices, soft drinks, milk powder and pastry) rich in mineral supplements (potassium iodide, calcium phosphate or carbonate, compounds of iron, zinc and selenium) and vitamins (А, С, D, Е, vitamin B complex).
