Arabinogalactan qualities: AG is an important water soluble plant polysaccharide which can be found in various evergreens, in particular larch trees, protecting wood. Long-term research has shown that this valuable nature compound has wide set of the useful properties:

  • All-natural soluble fiber; Arabinogalactan gum is 100% water soluble;
  • Produces low viscosity solutions – good body properties without viscosity buildup; Comparison of gums by viscosity.
  • Excellent dispersant (solvent) and surfactant properties;
  • Has stability over a wide range of concentrations, pH and temperature; Hydrolytic resistance of Arabinogalactan in water solutions largely depends on pH and temperature;
  • Arabinogalactan increases shelf life and resistance to aging. In order to increase shelf life it is recommended to use Arabinogalactan with an addition of antioxidants taxifolin and quercetin;
  • A good stabilizer – Arabinogalactan is used to increase the stability of emulsions and color (Arabinogalactan can be used as an additive in the way it is or combining it with glue). Arabinogalactan can be used as a colloidal system stabilizer. It also regulates suspensions of noble metals nanoparticles (Pt, Pd, Au);
  • Arabinogalactan is increasing the strength, printing and other properties of color;
  • Improves saturation and brightness of color;
  • Has a positive impact on gluten qualities. Surface-active and gluing properties of Arabinogalactan combined with low viscosity of strong solutions provide new perspectives of Arabinogalactan application;
  • Works as a thickening agent;
  • It is elastic and plastic, and has been used as plasticizer in production of dry cement mixtures and solutions, and also in concrete structures;
  • Has low toxicity. Arabinogalactan largely lowers toxicity level of medicines and raises their efficiency;
  • Is biodegradable;
  • Biological activity of arabinogalactan is high in general:
    • hepatoprotective,
    • antimutagenic,
    • mitogenic – stimulates lien and bone marrow cells division,
    • gastroprotective – has a profound gastroprotective and moderate antimicrobic effect in relation to certain bacteria;
    • Arabinogalactans are immunomodulators activating reticuloendothelial system (RES).They raise phagocytic index. It was established that AG of high purity degree with molecular mass of 20 kDa almost doubles the effectiveness of macrophages formation in comparison with Echinacea. It stimulates immunogenesis, strengthens immune system (at daily value 20 mg/kg (~1.5 g)), activates another branch of human immune system – complement system. Intake of this additive was reported to improve physical and emotional state of patients.
    • Larch Arabinogalactan has prebiotic properties. Recently interest towards prebiotic products has risen both in scientific literature and in official documents, related to microecology of human and animal gastro-intestinal tract. Prebiotics are nutrient materials, including biologically active nutrient fibers, selectively stimulating the growth and potency of normal gastrointestinal microflora, acting as a nutritional medium for bifid bacteria and lactobacilli (probiotics).
  • Has high membranotropic activity which enables targeted drug delivery; Thus, Arabinogalactan is a unique natural polysaccharide, playing an important role in technology, food industry and medicine. It is versatile and incredibly biologically active. Arabinogalactan modification strategy presupposes using it as a synthon for creation polyfunctional drugs. It can be used in order to increase absorptive capacities of other medicines with low bioavailability. Arabinogalactan can also serve for delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic agents, as well as enzymes, nucleic acids, vitamins or hormones to certain cells, in particular, hepatocytes (parenchymal liver cells); Siberian larch Arabinogalactan sulfonates possess anticoagulant potency;
  • Is a promising synthon, able to react with mono- and bifunctional reagents. It gives an opportunity to acquire new water soluble drugs and start their industrial production;
  • Has the ability to bind fat and retain moisture;
  • Has the ability to form complexes with biogenic metals;
  • Incorporates easily into foods;
  • Arabinogalactan has no impact on color, odor, taste or mouth feel. In food industry AG provides products with high content of dietary fiber with minimal impact on taste; acts as a texturizer, providing for good rheological properties, moisture, low calorie content, odor encapsulation. Improves taste of baked foods and increases their shelf-life. By adding AG into pastry items, it is possible to prevent moisture loss and increase stability in heat sterilization;
  • Low calorie content;
  • Ferments slowly;
  • Film forming properties;
  • Narrow molecular-weight distribution, etc. For the purposes of functionalization AG undergoes hydrogen peroxide or periodate oxidation. Also, there is a production of Arabinogalactan bromine derivatives.
